Mrs Chowdhury Talks to Year 6 About Ramadan

March 15, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

Many of the children in year 6 are fasting due to the holy month of Ramadan.

This has generated lots of discussion amongst the children.

Thank you to Mrs Chowdhury, who very kindly came up to year 6 where she read a page from the Quran in Arabic and showed the children the different ways that people choose to pray.  They learnt about fasting, prayers and the celebration of Ramadan.

Learning About the Holocaust

March 15, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

Following on from their learning in history, Year 6 were very fortunate to get a visit from Judith Hayman.

Judith’s mother and grandparents were all Austrian survivors, who managed to escape Austria after Hitler had invaded. The children learnt of the dehumanisation they suffered and the battles they faced while

living in Austria at this time. Judith presented a well

documented presentation which included photographs and real voice recordings from members of her family.

The children were attentive and asked sensible and well thought out questions. Judith commented on what lovely children they all were and how well behaved they were.

Year 6 you are a credit to Parkside.

A massive thankyou to Mrs Judith Hayman for giving up her time to speak to the children.

Year 6 Assembly

March 8, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

In history year 6 have been learning about the rise of Hitler, this included what it would have been like to be a Jewish child growing up under Nazi Germany.

In English they have been learning about what Britain was like during World War II, this covered rationing, the Blitz, blackouts and evacuation. This morning’s assembly was very informative. The children all learnt their lines and delivered them confidently and clearly and their acting skills were worthy of a BAFTA! They treated us to a very lively rendition of “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” and the grand finale was delightful as they sang and played instruments to the song “In the Mood” which they have been learning in music.

Year 5 Trip

March 8, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

This week, Year 5 had the pleasure of visiting Elstree and Borehamwood Synagogue and meeting Rabbi Alex Chapper.

This was linked to our RE topic as we have been learning about the traditions, sacred stories and symbols of Judaism.

The children had many inquisitive questions to ask the Rabbi and they definitely kept him on his toes!

Thank you to all involved in the organisation of our trip.

World Book Day 2024

March 8, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

What a wonderful day Parkside children had celebrating World Book Day this week.

From dressing up in clothes that they feel comfortable to read in, to an online Footy and Booky Quiz with the National Literacy Trust and a live lesson with BBC Teach, the children have had a truly wholesome experience. We had lots of fun taking part in Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R) sessions across the school and ended the day with paired buddy reading which was a great success.
