Football Tournament

May 3, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

A wonderful tournament this morning at Cedars Youth and Community Centre.

Thank you as always to Watford FC for inviting our children and providing them with great memories and experience of representing their school. Thank you also to the Literacy Trust who provided each team member an excellent new book.

Year 5 Poems

May 2, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

Year 5 have worked incredibly hard to create dramatic versions of their own poems.

As you can see they were absolutely brilliant and have crafted and demonstrated a great understanding of how to capture real understanding.

It has been a relatively quiet week but the children have continued to work hard. Myself and Mrs Samways carried out a pupil voice activity across Key Stages 1 and 2 into their learning in Science. We were both very encouraged by what we discovered, but also incredibly enlightened to hear how positive they feel about the teaching of science across the school. Please keep this going children.

Our Reception children gave a wonderful performance at this morning’s assembly and were able to recite much of what they have been doing in their recent writing lessons with confidence. They were absolutely great. Thank you children and thank you to Miss Pererira and Mrs Knightley for helping them.

Don’t forget we have another disco coming up on May 18th so put a note in your diary. As the warmer months are almost upon us it is still incredibly important that children come to school on time every day and in full uniform. Please keep supporting the school in all that we do.

Year 5 Poetry

April 25, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

In Year 5 we have been inspired by the British poet, Benjamin Zephaniah.

We read his poem entitled ‘The British’ which celebrates the rich diversity and cultures within Great Britain.

Using this as our inspiration, we wrote our own versions of his poem, celebrating the wealth of diversity and cultures in Year 5.

We then performed our poems using lots of expression gestures and prosody. We hope you enjoy watching them!

Bikeability for Nursery and Reception

April 19, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

On Thursday, we had the sports lead from Queens School, Catherine Owusu, visit to deliver bikeability sessions to our Nursery and Reception children.

All children develop differently and so the sessions will cater for complete beginners through to the more confident young riders. The sessions will follow the Bikeability Balance framework which complies with the Physical Activity Early Years – Creative Play programme.

What are the benefits of balance bikes?

  • Develops balance and control of movements
  • Develops motor skills, confidence & co-ordination
  • Promotes physical activity & a healthy lifestyle
  • Builds muscle & body strength
  • Develops awareness of the body and surroundings
  • Encourages bike control

This will also assist children in meeting the Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS):

  • Physical Development
  • Communication & Language
  • Mathematics
  • Social Development
  • Understanding the World

At Parkside Community Primary School, we continue to look for ways to nurture and inspire our children, even away from classroom, not only by competing in a variety of sports but by also providing opportunities which are meaningful and purposeful for our amazing children all the way through their Parkside journey from Nursery to Year 6.

Science Week 2024

March 22, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

We started our Science week at Parkside with a ‘bang’!

We had an amazing visit from Atomic Alex, from Sublime Science, who delivered some amazing Science workshops to the children. They were action packed with incredible feats of science: how to balance a ball in the air, creating smoke rings, hair raising experiences with electricity and of course, creating pots of gooey slime! All the children had so much fun and thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Year 5 Bouncy Egg

March 22, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

Year 5 has been very busy this week as part of our Science Week. Using this year’s theme of time, we created our own investigations that we observed closely throughout the week.

Do you think you can make an egg bounce? Well, Year 5 tested this theory!

We put eggs into white vinegar for 24 hours and observed the changes. We saw the reaction of the vinegar dissolving the egg shell. It created thousands of tiny bubbles on the shell. The shell even looked like a snake shedding its skin according to Vinnie, 5 Cedar.

We then ‘peeled’ the egg and had a go at bouncing them!

We had a few eggtastrophies along the way but 5 bouncy eggs survived!
