“My Voice Matters”: a look back at Children’s Mental Health Week 2024

February 15, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

New YouGov data released by Place2Be

We kicked off the week with the release of new data by Place2Be and YouGov, where we asked children and young people what they want and need to support their own mental health.

The data revealed that 55% of children and young people in the UK say they face barriers in accessing mental health support. This had coverage on BBC Newsround, Sky News and BBC Radio 5 Live.

We also found that 60% of primary and secondary school students say they worry about school work and exams, making it the top worry among children and young people. In response to this, Cecilia Corbetta, Regional Clinical Lead, shared some tips for families on how to support your child with these worries.

Children and young people themselves helped shape the week

In the lead up to the week, we visited schools to ask students what they wanted from the week and the adults involved. This helped shape our messaging to schools, families, parents and carers, and the activities we created for them. For example, our top tips for families, schools and children were written by young people themselves.

In a series of video interviews, students from Ark Charter Academy and Ark Globe Academy shared their thoughts on:

  • mental health
  • what matters to them
  • how they like to express themselves.

We also heard from young people from Childnet’s Youth Advisory Board on social media and mental health, and how they would make the internet and social media a safer place for children and young people.

Pupils from Knightsbridge Primary School, accompanied by Place2Be Ambassador Rhys Stephenson and Place2Be Champion Xavier Leopold, visited the Week Junior. Here, they guest-edited the magazine and recorded their own podcast.

From Star Wars to Sesame Street, stars supported the week

The week also saw stars get involved in conversations around the importance of using your voice. In a short film series, BAFTA Young presenters interviewed TV, film, music and sports personalities as they explored different ways young people can make their voices heard.

In partnership with Sesame Workshop, we released a new video for 2-5 year olds featuring Sesame Street’s Elmo and Place2Be Ambassador YolanDa Brown. ‘Celebrate The Day’ saw Elmo and YolanDa discuss healthy habits to promote positive wellbeing.

In Beano magazine, Dennis, Gnasher and the Bash Street Kids took part in their very own Express Yourself day for Children’s Mental Health Week too.

Cross-sector conversations

The week provided an opportunity for us to have important conversations about children and young people’s mental health and the need for cross-sector connections.

In a joint letter to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), covered in Politics Home, Place2Be and 28 leading charities called for long-term sustainable investment in school-based mental health services.

Alongside the NAHT, we wrote an article featured in TES calling for schools to be given more support for mental health. We also published a guest blog by the National Governance Association (NGA), which discussed ways to create cultures within schools where pupils’ voices are not only heard but actively sought out and valued.

Support from politicians and decision makers

Nearly 100 politicians across England, Scotland and Wales shared their support on social media with the #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek and promoted our resources.

We were pleased to secure a Westminster Hall Debate in Parliament, led by ex- shadow cabinet member for Mental Health, Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP.

We were also delighted to have the support of Dame Rachel De Souza, the Children’s Commissioner for England. On the week, she said:

“As Children’s Commissioner, I know how important good mental health and wellbeing is for young people. I am extremely concerned about the mental health of children and young people. Latest NHS statistics show that one in five children has a probable mental health disorder.

“In Children’s Mental Health Week, it is really important that we all stop and listen to what children are telling us about their wants, needs and concerns when it comes to their mental health so we can tackle this issue before it gets even more serious.

“Children often tell me issues with their mental health act as a significant barrier to their overall success, so we all have a role to play in supporting and helping to improve children’s mental health. Only when we all work together will we see meaningful change that will help transform the lives of young people.”

Home Fire Safety Visit

February 15, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

Parkside Community Primary,

My Name is Dwight Williams, and I am reaching out to you on behalf of the local fire station here in Borehamwood. I am the Watch Commander of Green Watch at the station. As a firefighter dedicated to ensuring the safety of our community, I am excited to introduce a new initiative aimed at enhancing home fire safety.

We are actively seeking to build partnerships with local primary schools to raise awareness about the importance of fire detection in every home. As part of our home fire safety visits, we conduct thorough checks on existing detectors, to ensure they are functioning correctly and appropriately located. To further support the cause, we are offering a complimentary service of fitting brand new, tamperproof battery detectors with a 10-year lifespan.

Families interested in a home fire safety visit can reach out to schedule an appointment. To facilitate the process, we ask that they provide their names, address, and contact telephone number.

Your collaboration is crucial in making our community safer, and together, we can ensure that no home is without proper fire detection. I appreciate your support in this important endeavour.

Kind regards,

Dwight Williams

Sport report from Phillip in Year 4

February 12, 2024/in General News/by parkside2024

Today was the best day of my life! I’ll tell you why…It was because I went to an Athletics competition at Yavneh College. It was a really proud moment for me to be included and it was great to walk together as a team from Parkside with Miss Bowers, Mr Honour and Mr Wanless.

The morning consisted of track events: relay and obstacle races along and Field events: Javelin, chest push, long jump, 5 strides and speed jump.

We competed against a number of schools from around Hertfordshire, 7 in total and managed to finish in 6th place but the most important thing for us was that we competed as a team and gave each other lots of positive support even when we were not winning events.

I thoroughly enjoyed the morning and I can’t wait to represent Parkside again in other sports.

Thank you to Miss Bowers, Mr Honour and Mr Wanless for your encouragement and support, Miss Bowers especially was crucial in knowing which events we were taking part in and when each one was.

I have chosen this song because no matter what is happening around us, it’s still a beautiful day and it shouldn’t be wasted “dont let it get away”.

Keep enjoying what you do and most importantly always keep trying to keep that smile on your face.

Mental Health Week 2024 in partnership with Place2be

February 9, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

My Voice Matters is about empowering children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves.

When we feel empowered, there’s a positive impact on our wellbeing. Children who feel that their voices are heard and can make a difference have a greater sense of community and self-esteem. This year, we have tried to encourage all of our children, no matter their ages, backgrounds or academic abilities to be empowered to work together to create a positive change for their mental health and wellbeing.

During Children’s Mental Health Week, we want Parkside to be able to say – and believe – “My Voice Matters.”

I want to say a big thank you to our staff and children for embracing this week with enjoyment, flexibility and enthusiasm.

Another big thank you must go to Flip Theatre who did a number of drama workshops for our children based on having a voice and what it means.  Miss Bowers deserves lots of praise for the work she has done to ensure our children are not only mentally healthy but physically healthy too, her fitness sessions and the organisation of the athletics competition were great for our children.

In the KS1 Hall, I am delighted to see our mental health and wellbeing board taking shape, and I hope children will look back and realise just how important and wonderful they all are in their own unique special way.

Fitness with Miss Bowers, our very own Joe Wicks… But better!

February 9, 2024/in General News/by Mark Pedrasa

On Thursday, Miss Bowers created a high energy fitness circuit with a focus on cardio.

The impact of physical education on young people’s mental health has been widely researched and has produced some profound findings. We know that physical activity reduces mental fatigue, increases motivation, lowers our risk of depression and enables children to express themselves through movement.

As well as this, it gives children the opportunity to work with others, understand how their strengths can impact a team and empower them to make decisions with confidence and the work we at Parkside do for our children is a proud moment for me as PE lead.

I believe Parkside is blazing a trail in providing opportunities for young people to take part in physical education and offer a well-rounded, holistic approach to mental health. By offering children the chance to take part in PE, take part in competitive sports both in and out of school we are providing them with sustainable and healthy skills that they can continue to use for years after their education.

Moki Health Bands:  The children are continuing to become more active and have entered the top 15% of Moki Schools.
