Our Curriculum
At Parkside Community School, the curriculum has been designed to create equality of opportunity based on imparting essential knowledge and the ability to apply skills learned.
The focus is on key information that pupils need to understand in order to make progress. Our curriculum is underpinned by our three core values: Respect Belong Achieve.
We recognise reading as a vital skill that supports children’s learning across the whole curriculum. We will ensure as a school that our children are taught to read with fluency, accuracy and understanding through a variety of discreet and cross-curricular learning opportunities. Essentially, we want all the pupils at our school to be enthusiastic, independent and reflective readers who enjoy reading across a range of genres.
We want all of our pupils to become independent learners and whose needs are met through a curriculum built on personalised learning which is rooted in the development of independent learning skills and enquiry. Above all, we believe learning should be enjoyable and built/established through an enriched programme of opportunity which includes visits to museums, theatres, art galleries, residential trips and working with local community businesses.
The curriculum content has been carefully chosen and is planned and sequenced to ensure children can build on their knowledge year-on-year. Therefore, because the knowledge in the curriculum is cumulative, firm foundations are laid from which children can progress and develop deeper conceptual understanding and subject-specific skills over time.
All subjects are taught discreetly, and the curriculum has been designed where possible to create meaningful links between subjects and opportunities for greater depth. Units of work are supported by knowledge organisers that detail what is to be learnt. We value parental / carer support and involvement in their children’s learning. Copies of knowledge organisers are sent home at the beginning of each unit to strengthen the links between the school and home. Any further details needed about our curriculum can be found by contacting our Deputy Head, Mrs Jade Herbaut.
