Well done to all the children from years 1 3 and  who were chose to participate in the local gymnastics competition on Tuesday morning.

You were all a credit to the school and Miss Bowers as very proud of you all. Your vault and floor performances were inspiring and many people commented on how well you performed. We look forward to more events in the future.

Congratulations to year 1 who came 2nd out of 5 teams, year 3 were placed 6th and 7th and year 5 came 5th and 6th out of 9 teams!

On Friday morning the children in year 1 shared with the school community all that they had learn in history this term on the topic of kings and queens in English history and the importance of the Magna Carta.

They began the assembly by telling us all about the different type of clothing Kings and Queens wore and where they lived but they also shared their learning about something very fascinating that happened a long time ago, in 1215. The children acted with great confidence and demonstrated how King John believed he could do what he wanted because he was king. He collected money for taxes from families which left them destitute and in need of support. If they were unable to pay their taxes they were imprisoned. Eventually it was decided the law that governed this procedure had to change and a new set of rules were drawn up. These new rules were introduced through the incredibly important document known as the Magna Carta. It enshrined in law that people couldn’t be imprisoned without a fair trial nor have their belongings or money taken from them unlawfully. This was a a very important moment in history which is still law today.

Red nose day at Parkside, this is an annual campaign that raises life-changing funds to help end the cycle of poverty and ensure children are safe, healthy, educated and empowered across the world. Wearing a red nose symbolises fun and coming together.

Year 2 class assembly today was about the Romans invasion of Britain.

Why did the Romans invade Britain? The Romans invasion of Britain could be the most important event ever to happen to the British Isles. The Romans affected our language, our culture, our geography, and the way we think. Around 2000 years ago Britain was ruled by tribes of people called the celts. For around 100 years the Roman army had been building an empire across Europe. The Romans wanted Britain’s precious metals gold, tin and iron.

Who attempted to invade Britain?

In 54-55BC Julius Caesar tried to invade but failed. In AD43, ordered by emperor Claudius, a big Roman army landed on the beaches in Kent. Over the next year it battled inland, storming through hillforts and conquering many of the celts who already lived in Britain and stood in their way.

Did the Romans and Celts (people already living in Britain) live in peace?

If the Celts made peace with the Romans, they agreed to obey Roman laws and pay taxes. In return, they could keep their kingdoms. However, some Celtic leaders chose to fight. After many years of heavy taxes and Romans taking their land, some celtic tribes were desperate for revenge.

They continued to learn about Boudicca. Year 2 have enjoyed learning about the Romans.
