Headteacher’s Newsletter – Friday 9th November 2018

It was lovely to see the children return to school after a much needed half term break with a renewed focus and enthusiasm. They have settled back in to their routines and are working hard. We were also pleased to welcome many parents and carers to our Autumn term consultations on Wednesday and Thursday evening, and judging by the number of happy faces that we saw the hard work and progress the children have made was shared in a positive way. But there is still much to be done!! Thank you to everyone who completed a questionnaire, we will publish the results in a couple of weeks and will share with you the actions that need to be implemented to improve the outcomes for the children. This half term is always full of joy and excitement as we lead up to Christmas, the children will receive their lines for their productions soon and we look forward to celebrating them with the whole school community later in the term. Our new After School Club will launch after Christmas and will offer parents / carers complete wrap around care from 7.45am through to 6.00pm every day. Please continue to support the school in all that we do for the children.

The word of the week is : REMEMBRANCE – the action of remembering the dead. Let us take a moment this weekend to remember those who sacrificed so much for so many.

SCHOOL KITCHEN – We were very pleased with the recent 5 star food hygiene rating recently. It is down to the hard work of Mrs Cleary (Vicky) and her team in the school kitchen. This is the highest award that can be given by Environmental Health and something we are all very proud of. CONGRATULATIONS VICKY TO YOU AND YOUR TEAM ON SUCH A FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT!

SCHOOL DINNERS – The quality of the school dinners at Parkside is excellent and provides very good value for money. Some of you sampled a few of the dishes at consultation appointments this week which we hope you found to be very nutritious. It would be amazing to see more children take up the opportunity to eat a hot and healthy meal every day. Meals cost £2.40 a day or £12.00 per week. Children in Key Stage 1 are entitled to free school meal through Year 1 and 2. If you would like further information about school meals please speak to a member of staff in the office.

TREE PLANTING – Just before half term a small group of children in Year 6 represented the school at a tree planting ceremony as part of the Queen’s Canopy initiative – a legacy for the future. They represented the school magnificently and were wonderful ambassadors for Parkside. Events like this are important to the school and help the children to understand how their learning can have an impact on the future of the town. Thank you to Rotary Club of Borehamwood for sponsoring the event and inviting the children to take part.

DATES – Please look out for a link which will take you this half term’s dates.

CHRISTMAS CARDS – You should have all received your child’s Christmas card designs earlier this week. They look amazing and for a first project the Friends are very pleased with they things have gone so far.  Please remember that all orders have to be placed by : FRIDAY 16TH NOVEMBER. Unfortunately the company who are printing the cards have made it very clear that they cannot process any late orders so please make sure that you hand in your completed order on time. We look forward to receiving your orders next week.

2nd Place – Year 1 Maple Class 98.9% attendance

3rd Place – Year 5 Ash Class 98.1%

4th Place – Year Year 2 Alder 97.1%

There were 32 children who arrived late to school this week which is a significant improvement compared to the week prior to half term. Please continue to be punctual and arrive at school on time.

REMEMBRANCE DISPLAY – This weekend we remember the many men and women who sacrificed their lives during the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts. The children have made some beautiful poppies to decorate our display which will remain up through November.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

DIVERSITY DAY AT THE ARSENAL TRAINING GROUND – A group of  very lucky Year 5 children spent the day at the Arsenal training ground at London Colney late last term. They learnt about different faiths and beliefs through a celebration of sport. Events like this are an important way of supporting and demonstrating our British Values and tolerance and understanding of other faiths. Thank you children for being so well behaved and for representing the school so well.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUB – Our new after club will open on January 8th 2019 and places are filling up very quickly. Those of you who expressed an interest will receive further information next week, but, for any parent / carer who is interested in  booking a place there is still time. Please speak to a member of the Office staff for more information.  We hope that you are able to use this service in the New Year to support the school and your child.
