Headteacher’s Newsletter – Friday 22nd September 2023 – Autumn 3

The weather has certainly turned and once again there is a feel of Autumn in the air. But it is all set to change again next week! The new displays in the main building look fantastic and the children and staff have done a great job in bringing the work alive. The pieces on display are based on the whole school text –  The Invisible – a story about a young girl’s struggles and the tough issue of homelessness. If you are in and around the buildings please spend some time reading the children’s work. We will hold our annual general meeting of the Friends of Parkside on Thursday 28th September at 3:30pm in one of the former Year 2 classes. Please make every effort to attend and we welcome your ideas to help raise funds for the children. Last week the Mayor of Hertsmere paid us a visit, this week it was the turn of the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire – Mrs Elizabeth Green –  who spent time meeting and greeting the good folk who run the WD6 foodbank. It was great to talk with her about the fantastic work they do and to hear how she is in full support of this type of work.  Please continue to support the school in all that we do for your child.

The word of the week is – GRUNTLED – (1930S) at ease and content.

THE BIG QUESTION – Can kindness change the world?
Try discussing this question with your child to help them think about developing their thinking skills.

THIS WEEK’S EXAMPLES OF THE CHIDLREN’S WORK

CHANGE TO THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY – Week 4 – The government has issued a directive to all schools about 32.5 hours of teaching time every child in the country is entitled to. To meet this new directive we will open the school gates as normal at 8:30am BUT they will CLOSE at 8:45am from MONDAY 30th OCTOBER. Please make sure you make a note of this change. We will continue to put it in all of our newsletters from the start of the new academic year until FRIDAY 20th OCTOBER.

WELCOME TO MRS SMITH – A big welcome to Mrs Smith our new SENCo who started with us this week. We look forward to working her over the weeks ahead and if you have any concerns about your child please contact the school office where an appointment can be made for you to meet with her.

CONGRATULATIONS MR WANLESS – Last week Mr Wanless swam a mile ( no mean feat) in the famous and prestigious waters of the Serpentine in London’s Hyde to raise money for Dementia UK. He writes:
‘Thank you so much for all the support and best wishes from our families, it meant a great deal to me to raise £309 for Dementia UK’

PARKING ISSUE – One of neighbours writes –
To whomever this may concern,

I am a resident of the flats opposite the school. I frequently finish work around the same time the school finishes.
I come home and am stuck trying to find a parking space outside my own flat. The parking outside is there for residents and not parents to go pick their children up from school.

I have worked a long shift and just want to go home and rest and sleep, im sure you can understand, but then having to wait up to 30 mins just so i can actually park somewhere.

I hope this issue can be resolved.

I am sure you will agree with me that we need to consider our neighbours when you collect your child from school. Please think about their needs.

WD6 FOODBANK – Over the coming months the good folk at the WD6 Foodbank will partner up with members of the Clarion Housing board and Citizens Advice Bureau to offer advice and support for those people who use the foodbank. The monthly surgeries will take place here at the school in a designated room at the front of the building. More details to follow.

The WD6 Food support is open on WEDNESDAY & FRIDAYS from 3:15pm – 4:30pm. Parkside families can have access from 3:15pm directly after school.

ATTENDANCE AND FOOD WASTE – Congratulations to the children from 4 ASPEN and
3 BIRCH who both had 100% attendance this week. Thank you children and please continue to be an inspiration to others.

Well done to the children from 4 ASPEN who had the least amount of food waste this week. Thank you children for making good choices and  enjoying your food.
