Headteacher’s Newsletter – Friday 21st October 2022 – Autumn 5

As the first half term of the year draws to a close the dark nights begin to draw in but the quality of learning continues to impress. It was lovely to see so many of you at this week’s consultations and I’m sure you will agree, that the children have settled in to their new classes incredibly well and are making good progress. The key area for development for them this year is about their ability to articulate what they have learnt and how they apply this learning in class before learning any new skill. This is something teachers and senior leaders will concentrate on through the year. Our annual FIREWORK EXTRAVAGANZA takes place on THURSDAY 3rd NOVEMBER from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. Tickets  cost £4 and will be on sale right up until the evening. Please make every effort to attend for what promises to be a spectacular event. Please remember that clocks go back on SUNDAY 30th OCTOBER and school reopens on MONDAY 31st OCTOBER.

The word of the week – BLUTTERBUNGED – (19th Century) – dumbfounded, confounded and open mouthed in amazement.

THIS WEEK’S EXAMPLES OF THE CHILDREN’S WORK

October is Black History Month and we have celebrated the work of a number of different black and brown people who have made a huge contribution to the culture of our country. The pictures below show how they have done this. We hope that you enjoy them and learn as much as the children did.

It was lovely to welcome children from every year group to my office on Thursday afternoon where they shared with me their learning journey through the week. They spoke to me about how and why capital letters are used, the importance of darkness as part of the day and night cycle, the reasons why the second World War started, myths and legends and the life and times of John Barnes the former black professional footballer. The children were very proud of their work and could tell me what they needed to do to improve. Thank you children!!

THANK YOU TO RED PEPPER PIZZA – Some of our year 6 children put their design and technology skills to the test on Friday afternoon by making pizzas. Mrs Lunniss put them through their paces and the children managed to produce a cheese and tomato, vegetarian and margherita pizzas. To quote Sorin:

“Today in year 6 we have made our very own pizza. we would love to thank Red Pepper Pizza on Leeming Road for their generous donation of pizza boxes. We are very thankful for the boxes. We had a lovely time making the pizzas.”

YEAR 6 SCHOOL JOURNEY TO PGL CENTRE MARCHANTS HILL – Our intrepid adventurers from Year 6 have had another wonderful week down in Marchants Hill. Judging by the photos and from spending time with the children on Tuesday they have had a wonderful time. If your child is in Year 5 please speak to other families who have enjoyed the experience. It is one of the most important weeks in the children’s time during their primary education and the memories live with them for a life time. https://www.pgl.co.uk/en-gb/adventure-holidays/centres/marchants-hill
