Headteacher’s Newsletter – Friday 17th November 2023 – Autumn 10

It has been Anti-Bullying week across the country this week. This year’s theme MAKE A NOISE ABOUT BULLYING was explored in classes and the work the children produced in lessons was shared at our weekly Friday morning celebration assembly. Flip Theatre visited school on Wednesday afternoon and their representatives worked with all classes, to think about how, as a school, we can develop positive relationships. It was a great experience for everyone. Everybody wore odd socks on Wednesday to support the theme of Anti-Bullying Week, a simple way of raising awareness of this important issue. Tickets for the Parents and Friends first disco of the year go on sale after school from Monday 20th November. Please give them as much support as you can. It has been a couple of years since they held their last one and we look forward to this one being a great success. The Year 6 Hockey team gave a great account of themselves at a tournament that was held at Hertswood Academy School earlier in the week and ended up being the runners up; congratulations children and incredibly well done. Further sporting updates can be read below. Please continue to support the children in all that we do for them as a school.
The word of the week is – BLUTTERBUNGED – (19th Century) – confounded, bemused, or totally overcome by surprise.
THE BIG QUESTIONWhich magical object would you choose to have and why – marauders map, time turner or invisibility cloak?
Try discussing this question with your child to help them think about developing their thinking skills.
THIS WEEK’S EXAMPLES OF THE CHILDREN’S WORK

MR WANLESS WRITES WITH A SPORTING UPDATE:

Rapid Fire Cricket – Year 4

The children played superbly well as a team and narrowly missed out on reaching the county finals by 1 point.

Basketball – Year 6

A first Basketball competition for Parkside took place on Monday at Queens’ school, a sport which a lot of our children are very interested in, so it was a delight to hear the excitement and enjoyment on their return to school. Although they didn’t make the semi-finals, they should be proud of how well they linked up and communicated as a team.

Hockey – Year 6

The Year 6 team showed some amazing skills at a sport which was quite new to them but as the games progressed you could see the children really growing in confidence, unfortunately the year 6 team lost 1-0 in the final.

Speed Stacking – Year 2

A sport which as a school we are becoming increasingly competitive at and for a second year in a row, we were the overall winners of the event at Hertswood.

Football vs Woodlands

The Year 3/4 team battled so courageously but were narrowly beaten 2-1. A team full of potential. Well done boys.

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD –  Children from Year 6 joined a number of schools from across the area on Thursday afternoon at Vicarage Road the home of Watford Football Club to take part in the long established initiative – GIVE RACISM THE RED CARD. They were empowered to think about ways in which they could combat racism and took part in a number of interactive sessions which helped them to do this. They were fantastic ambassadors for the school and many people commented on how well behaved they were. Thank you children for being such a great example for others to follow.
FLIP THEATRE VISIT  – The Flip Theatre visited the children on Wednesday during Anti-Bullying week with a focus on ‘Positive Relationships’.
The children were taught how to use a range of  strategies to help deal them with situations in and out of school, which helped them to improve their confidence to speak out for themselves and others. They were also provided with an opportunity to role play scenarios and rework these and encourage to engage critical thinking to determine what went well and what didn’t to prevent escalation. Children were also given reminders how to create a positive atmosphere, spread happiness, compliment each other and focus on activities that make us happy.
