Year 2 Spring Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

 

We hope you have had a restful winter break.  We look forward to an exciting Spring Term.  Our topic for this half term is ‘Explorers’ followed by ‘The Great Fire of London’.

 

Maths During the spring term the children will continue to revisit topics they have already covered.  They will be learning various strategies for addition and subtraction of numbers up to 100 and above.  We will be practicing multiplication and division.  The children will be reading time and measuring length, capacity and weight.  We will also be solving problems.
English The children will continue to take part in phonics groups every morning.  Spelling tests will be on a Friday. Please help your child learn these each week.

In the Literacy lessons, children will receive specific grammar teaching. They will be taught spelling rules and patterns which they will be expected to transfer into their writing. We will be working on a variety of texts including poetry, non- fiction and fiction. We will be looking at adventure stories to start with.

History During the second half term in our History topic we will be learning about the Great Fire of London. We are planning a visit by the Local Fire Brigade to support the children’s learning.
Geography In the first half term we will be learning about different oceans and continents. We will also carry out a study of life in St Lucia and compare that to life in Borehamwood.
Science In Science we will be looking at the properties of different materials and their suitability for purpose.
Art We will be using watercolour paints to paint different flowers and animals that are found in St Lucia.
DT We will looking at mechanisms that make vehicles move in Design and Technology.  The children will design and make their own fire engine, linked to our Great Fire of London topic.
RE Before the Easter break in our RE lessons, we will be learning about why Easter is important to Christians.
Computing Children will be taught about internet safety focusing on communicating online safely.  They will also be taught to research using google and other search engines. In the second part of the Spring Term, children will learn how to take and take and edit digital images.
PE Year 2 will be doing PE with ‘CSE’ where they will learning dance and tennis.
SMSC Our 2 units this term are ‘Dreams and Goals’ and ‘Healthy Me’.  Children will be discussing their own dreams and goals and actions that they can do do help achieve them and will be learning about healthy eating, being physically active and staying calm.

PE– Please be reminded that children will need a P.E. Kit in school at all times.  This should be black shorts, a plain white t-shirt and plimsolls.

Uniform– Please ensure your child has the correct uniform and footwear.  Earring should be studs and no jewellery should be worn unless faith related.

Water– Children may bring a bottle of water each day, they also have access to the drinking fountain at all playtimes.

Home Learning– Your child is expected to read daily at home.  Please ensure that you listen to them read and sign their reading diary.  They will have weekly spellings and will be tested on a Friday.  Children will also be set a maths and topic homework.  They will have 2 weeks to complete this.  Often their maths homework will be an online activity from matheltics.

Key Stage 1 Christmas Production

Dear Parents/Carers,

The Key Stage 1 Christmas play ‘Sugar Plum’ will be performed on Wednesday 5th December at 2pm and Thursday 6th December at 9:15am.

So that we meet health and safety requirements and fire legislation, we have 100 tickets for each performance. Tickets are restricted to 3 per family in total – not per performance.  Small children and babies are welcome during Wednesday’s performance only.

Using the reply slip at the bottom of this letter, please indicate which tickets you require and return to the school office by Friday 30th November.

 

Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
